Love You Gone A gripping psychological crime novel with an incredible twist eBook Rona Halsall

This was a very intriguing book. I am going to keep my review brief because the less you know, the more you will enjoy the book...

I was hooked on the story from the beginning and it kept my attention until the very last page. Every time I thought I had figured out what was really going on, another clue would be revealed and I would start second-guessing myself. I would read and then think, 'no way!' What a roller coaster ride full of twists and turns! I did catch on to one part of the storyline, but the outcome was shocking (and I will admit thinking something about that character that was not very ladylike)!

I could not put this book down once I started it — I stayed up way too late tonight reading. I kept thinking 'just a few more pages,' but I had to know what happened next! A great five star read!

AfterThought: This is the first book I have read by Rona Halsall, but it definitely will not be the last!

Love You Gone A gripping psychological crime novel with an incredible twist eBook Rona Halsall Reviews

The author did a wonderful job keeping up the suspense. The book starts out one way and then goes off in several directions. The ending was perfect. Sadly in our world today, we meet all kinds of people and many come with disguises and they are able to manipulate. This book should be read as it can help us identify, to some extent, the character of those we meet in life. Bravo.
This book was written very well and pulled me in from the first page. There are two sides to every marriage, but domestic violence in any form outweighs other issues and this writer did an excellent job outlining the abuses suffered in this story. The ending was not surprising, but well thought out and delivered.

This is a quick read and well worth the price paid!
I like novels that are described as "thrillers" or "psychological" thrillers to live up to that name. I do not enjoy novels described as such that wander around, in slow motion, never seeming to arrive at a point that lives up to the description. This definitely was not one of those reads. The characters were interesting and the plot was psychological but also fast-moving. I enjoyed reading it.
I've read a few psychological thriller books, and while they all love to claim that you will be unable to put the book down, this one was actually true! Very good book.
Luke's wife (Anna) died suddenly of an aneurysm leaving behind a daughter (Tessa) & a son (Callum). About a year after Anna died, Luke met Mel. It had been a whirlwind romance. Eight months later, they married. On their wedding night, Mel hit Luke for the first time.

Mel had completely underestimated how hard being a stepmother would be. She was struggling to slip into a role of mother to two children who were still grieving. Luke had seriously underestimated how hard it would be to integrate into a harmonious family.

Luke had one view of parenting & Mel had another. She verbally abused the children & she threw away all the pictures of their mother. Callum started wetting the bed. The violence escalated. Unable to control her anger, which flared up in an instant, they all tiptoed around her. They were afraid of her. But, the last thing Luke needed was social services or the police getting involved, because he had a BIG secret.

Sometimes, he went out & wouldn't tell her where he was going. She suspected he was having an affair. She paid an expert in surveillance to follow him. She discovered that he was involved in something illegal. She threatened to go to the police with her evidence, IF he left her. Then, what would happen to his kids? Fearing for their safety, Luke took the children & they "disappeared". But, that didn't go as planned.
I enjoyed this, and I recommend not reading some of the more negative reviews here because they contain plot spoilers. Seriously people, stop doing that. It's one thing if you didn't personally enjoy a book but don't ruin it for others who might like it. So rude. This was an enjoyable read and I'm going to check out the author's other book. She knows how to tell a good story.
Too bad. I enjoyed the beginning of this book, but the novel suffered a serious decline in plot/character/substance about a quarter of the way in. I understood the references to "Gone Girl" in other reviews, which is one the reasons I picked this one up, but there are major differences between having a plot IDEA and executing it well.

Some spoilers ahead

The protagonist in the beginning SEEMS sympathetic, but cracks appear early on, indicating that Not All is What it Appears. We then find out that this character is, to the contrary, Rather Awful. The counterpart, her husband, is then given ample space in the narrative to weave his part of the plot, which makes him out to be the Victim Here.

The problem is, Mel (the wife) is a classic abuser, and the husband (Luke) gives classic excuses for her behaviour. When he allows Mel to use him as a punching bag, to terrorize and finally physically damage his children, a reader is profoundly chilled by his own actions. There's no excuse for Luke's passivity; his character has never been portrayed as classically damaged or flawed to the point of inactivity, he has no severe childhood scars that excuse his lack of care and compassion for his children.

The shallow characters and weak plot points bring this novel down. I saw everything coming a mile away, but I didn't even CARE. What separates bad novels from good novels is the careful details and the build up of character is good novels. We may find the characters repellent in a good novel, but at least we understand them; they are never caricatures. They have depth; they seem real. In so many novels I read nowadays (okay, I read like a fiend, good novels, bad novels, mediocre novels...) authors seem indifferent to the thought that everything in a narrative needs fine-tuning. Make the audience CARE about the people who inhabit your universe. Otherwise, you have a plot that may be interesting, but if cartoon characters live there, who cares? If they die, I certainly don't. If they have two-dimensional motivations, then nothing pulls the plot along in a compelling way.

I've said my piece for the day. Off to read another maybe good/bad/mediocre/indifferent novel.
