A Fantasy/Sci fi Romance

Reluctantly Sarah takes on the challenge of re-defining the speech of the prototype of a new range of Androids. The model is about to go into production at the British plant of Nikoto Robotics. Her husband, their chief science officer thinks that her expertise as a teacher stands her in good stead to modify the ‘stilted’ vocabulary of the artificial intelligence known as Nick.

Sarah has problems of her own trapped in a loveless marriage but unable to break free from her oppressive overbearing husband Robert. When he suggests she take on the challenge of giving elocution lessons to a Robot she does so with little enthusiasm. How was she to know that her new pupil had been ‘contaminated during manufacture with human DNA? Moreover how could she possibly envisage the relationship that would develop between teacher and pupil as they worked together to achieve Robert’s ultimate goal, the perfect Android?

As a friendship evolves from an uneasy beginning Sarah begins to suspect that something is amiss with Nick’s changing personality. Before she realizes it, their friendship has turned into something more as they both plan to dupe Robert into extending Nick’s stay in their home. Could she be falling in love with an Android? What is more, was he developing feelings for her also?
With tentative plans to reveal the changes in Nick’s genetic makeup, their affair is discovered and they are swept up in the tragic climax to what began as a simple accident. Sarah and Nick could not only lose each other but also their lives as Robert unleashes his fury.

The unusual storyline premise for this book sounded both promising and intriguing, thus the reason for my reading choice: elocution lessons given by a teacher quickly turn to love for the android she's instructed to naturalize. This scifi/romance combo didn't disappoint and was a pleasant surprise, because it proved to be an engaging read that sped along page after page. The Author, Maureen Turner, has penned a well-written and emotionally charged story that was breath catching with its rollercoaster highs and lows. The depth of authenticity rang true throughout. Does someone's DNA alter their capacity for love to live on? Does fate really exist? Can love overcome insurmountable obstacles? Both Sarah and Nick prove it can in an unusual, but realistically told narrative.

The Perfect Android edition by Maureen Turner CreativeLeaf Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I read this short novel this morning in a couple of hours and really enjoyed it. Maureen Turner has given us the perfect man; an android who aims to please. Sarah the main character is trapped in a loveless marriage with a domineering husband but does not complain when he brings his work home in the form of an android called Nick. This story reads like a daydream one may have whilst doing the housework and why not? With a love found and then lost this feel good story will show even when just a bit of love survives great things can grow. An unusual love story and nicely written.
The Nikoto MH1 was the next big thing in Artificial Intelligence, an android so lifelike that it could easily be mistaken for human. Asked by her Robotics expert husband to help naturalise `Nick's' speech, Sarah Pettifer embarked upon a journey that would change her and her life irrevocably.

This was a thoughtful and moving story following a prototype android as it, tainted by human DNA during production, transforms from consumer product to sentient being. I confess that this story was not at all what I was expecting. It was a much more tender and less violent (although Nick might justifiably disagree) exploration of the subject than I am used to. Whether by accident or design, the extensive use of long sentences resulted in a gentle, flowing narrative. The author's use of language was skilful and intelligent. Her excellent descriptive powers have created characters with depth and authenticity. They have also led to a backdrop and scenes that are utterly believable.

As many of you will know, I am a great lover of action and, prior to reading this story, I assumed that its absence would compromise my enjoyment. However, what this story may lack in set piece action sequences, it more than makes up for in depth and profundity.

The examination of how Nick and Sarah's hopes and desires are dashed against the rocks of circumstance is touchingly real. Although I doubt that the author has ever watched as an android morphs into a human, I feel confident that she has experienced the profound disappointment of dreams being cruelly shattered. This led me to wonder if I would have enjoyed the story even more if it had been written in an autobiographical style. This is not meant as a criticism, It is merely a musing.

This Pinocchio theme has been explored on a number of occasions. Most notably, perhaps, in Isaac Asimov's I robot, Philip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Blade Runner) and Brian Aldiss's Super-Toys Last All Summer Long (A.I. Artificial Intelligence). Maureen's interpretation, however, seems to engage you on a much more personal level. I believe that is because the love story at its heart is something with which we can all more readily identify.

It is at this point I feel I need to address the `elephant in the room'. Whilst it is possibly inevitable that comparisons will be made between this and similarly themed stories, I am not sure inviting such comparisons by virtue of the chosen title will do this work any favours and I think the author should seriously consider re-titling the work.

This being said, however, it was a captivating and enjoyable read and definitely deserves my `highly recommended' rating.

**** Highly Recommended
Science fiction romance with a different sort of premise. This book tells the story of a frustrated and downtrodden woman whose life is altered forever when her uncaring husband brings home an advanced android for her to teach idiomatic English.
The characters are well realised; the android is especially well drawn, which is quite an achievement. It's easy to empathise with the main female character and she grows through the story.
Essentially a love story, the premise drives this interesting and engaging tale. I won't reveal the detail as it'll spoil the read, but I did enjoy the idea that's the heart of this novel. An unusual read, and one I enjoyed. Lovers of modern romance will enjoy this book.
I really liked this story. I've read a number of robot stories and this one has a familiar ring to it. The Head of Robotics takes home a prototype, Nick, and asks his long-suffering reluctant wife, Sarah, to help with the robot's speech inflections to get the 'robotic' tone out of its voice as it is a very realistic humanoid robot, difficult to tell from a human being. However, this particular android has been contaminated accidently by human DNA and is remarkably more human than anyone knows, a fact that Sarah finds out the longer she spends in its company.

As time goes on Nick becomes much more than a 'household helper'. The thing is though he is in danger of being disassembled before he has a chance to prove his eligibility as a human and the story picks up pace from there. It's a short story that flows really well and develops into a love story of sorts but it's fraught with uncertainty and risk.
I enjoyed this book very much. I love robots, and an android is close enough! It's a unique love story as it involves a romance between a human woman and an android male. I listened to this rather than reading it, so I can't comment on punctuation or spelling. However, I thought the writing was good and the story flowed well. It held my attention.
