First of all, I would like to say that I'm a huge fan of I Am Number Four. When I read I Am Number Four, I got to know who John Smith was and felt his emotions throughout the book. I also like on how each character had their own personality such as Sam, Henry, Bernie, and Sarah. The book had a focus on John's personal life and his adventure of survial. Each chapter made you want to read the next chapter. It was very addicting because each chapter had a half finished dramtic scene, making you damn curious whats going to happen. Also in the end, I was so mad on how they just cut out Henry from the story by making him die. This was really a sad ending but the scene made me feel as though I was in John's position of losing a father. "sorry for the spoiler but I think Henry should have at less survive the2nd book". Compared to the recent back called The Power of Six, it was poorly written. It first starts out with a girl named Maria, talking about her past and recent activites on the search of John Smith. I have to admit that the first chapter was good but as you read head on, the story switches between two different character's conflict and story. This method of switching around to show on who is doing what is intresting, but i think the author is over doing it by extending the information. Like for an example, the author writes a few chapters of Maria searching for her box. That is just a waste of time, yes i understand that she has to find her box filled with her inhertance but is it really necessary to make her search for her box that long? I would rather like to hear more about John Smith. If I were to ask did you do anything specal today? I wouldn't want to hear every single thing you did but I rather hear the most intresting thing you did. I would also like to say on why did the author give Maria's guardian so little personality? I was expecting her to teach Maria like Henry. I felt as though she was just a background that did not play a significant role in this book. After reading the book all I knew is that she wanted to be a priest and treated Maria poorly. Also the way she died, had nothing to it. I did not feel any emotion like the way Henry died. I think the author could have done better by making Maria's story more of an adventure rather then a story filled with her daily task or choirs. I mean most of the characters that Maria met did not have emotionsfrom start. The author was procrastinating on what Maria's story that could have been amazing. As you read the book its a very slow process of anything significant that is happening. John's Smith story had a little more excitment to it because he had to run from the human society and fight aliens. After reading throughout the chapters of a boring slow story, the action finally takes place near the final chapters. The climax of each character is very intresting because it leads the book into a new book that might come out later throughout the year. As you read near the final chapters, you can tell that the author is rushing the book by adding the discovery of the new numbers. I mean wow really adding 3 new members to a book without even a short reference of their history or who they are is kind of a bad ending. I waited a year to read this book and was very dissapointed on the author's method of rushing things at the end and slowing down a story with a endless search of a box and character text that had nothing significant related to Maria.

The Power of Six Lorien Legacies Pittacus Lore Books Reviews

In the not so distant past I worked at a few book stores. A problem I ran into frequently was finding books for teen boys. The YA market is flooded with books meant solely for girls. Boys have always been a harder sell when it comes to reading and publishers haven't made it an easier job, especially when they have flooded the teen market with paranormal romance.

So recommendations for teen boys often meant I would recommend The Hunger Games. Unfortunately many guys aren't too keen on reading a book in which the main character is a girl, no matter how good the story is. So after going through the other 5 or 6 good teen guy books I could think of I would often recommend a book in the general fiction and literature section, but parents often fear that their children will encounter questionable subject matter. Which they may, but they should also remember many of the books their children read in school are found in the fiction and literature not the teen section.

I found "I am Number Four" to be a great action adventure, that followed the traditional hero archetype. The main character, number Four or John Smith, is as relatable as a alien teenager on the run can be. The surrounding cast of characters rounds out this alien boys average existence, Henri, his alien guardian/father figure, Sam, his nerdy best friend, Sarah, his crush, and Mark, a bully and Sarah's ex. The story is a super power driven action packed adventure, filled with all the tender feelings and angst that a every teenager has.

It was a quick read. I got through it in about a day and a half. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of 13.Read more ›
Like I Am Number Four, this one has a pretty cool cover. Very sci-fi. However, it did throw me because I assumed this book would be mainly about Six. I guess I didn't read the description. Hah. Good one.

I'll start by saying that I actually enjoyed this a lot more than the first in the series. I didn't not enjoy the first one... I was just middling on it. This one I was actually pleasantly pleased with. Some of the aspects in the first that were a bit confusing made much more sense in this one and I found that I remembered many more details than I thought I would. I loved how this one had a lot more action and mystery.

I also loved how the characters were fleshed out more, while we were still introduced to some new ones. I really like Six and I'm glad she was heavily featured. Sam will always be one of my favorite characters. He's human and basically amazing. Four is such a flawed character, which is nice to see in a main character. He makes some really dumb decisions, but they are decisions I can kind of understand. Four, Six, and Sam make a pretty amazing trio. I'm kind of glad Sarah wasn't around. Her relationship with Four is kind of mediocre to me.

The Power of Six is told in alternating points of view--John (Number Four) and Marina (Number Seven). The writing style was very effective for this book. Just when something major would happen, the points of view would shift so the reader is left wondering what is going on with the other character. It kept me reading late into the night!

Overall, this is a pretty action packed book. There are numerous battles, adventures, and even deaths. Now I'm looking forward to the next one!

P.S. Bernie Kosar is still awesome. )
