Sandford is the master and Davenport is his guy. I think Davenport is part Sandford and part his creation. I'm 22 Prey books into this.
My only disappointment is the sole movie creation of the Prey Series, "Certain Prey ".
My gut tells me that my reading imagination surpasses the film adaptation. I just wish they'd give it another shot, perhaps with a different Lucas Davenport . Love Harmon, but the film seemed like an attempt to put the story into an NCIS format. It's so special that, this simply cannot work. Please somebody in Hollywood land, bring us Lucas Davenport on the screen.

Yeah a really good one but pretty easy to predict. A cute beginning to Lucas & Weather's love story...and if youve read any others you know about Davenports scars and injuries...this is the one (SPOILER) where he gets it in the throat.
It's been a great summer being entertained by John Sandford's Prey series. Winter Prey is the fifth in the series, and I had to wait until I had already gotten to the 18th in the series before I could get this book (library couldn't locate a copy) In Winter Prey, Davenport finds Winter, (spoiler alert, destined to become his wife some 10 books later) and gets a temporary badge back.

This is another well plotted killer who Sandford keeps concealed until the very end. The plotting is very good, the characters are very well drawn, and the story is fast moving. For anyone looking for an engaging series you can't go wrong with any of the Prey books by John Sandford.
John Sanford's books are always gripping but this one was even more so! And the introduction of Weather Karkinnen as a foil to Lucas Davenport really creates great reading! Now I'm hooked on the "Prey" series and can't wait for the next one!
This starts out somewhat confusing, then becomes tedious for a while. After that rights itself. The second half becomes traditional Sandford. Good plot and interesting characters as usual. Bad guy is very nasty, but he remains well hidden. He was not the most obvious candidate for the bad guy, but becomes just right at the end. This may be weakest Sandford I have read so far because of the problematic start, but but it ends very well. Sandford's books are best read in order, so by the time you reach this book, you will already be a fan. But don't make this your first Sanford book.
Great book. Kept me on the edge of the seat. Starts off with 3 murders by a fiend nicked named The Iceman who shows up on a snowmobile, torches the house and victims and disappears into the bitter cold and snow. Davenprot is called in for his excellent knowledge. A photo of child porn using local children seeem to be the reason for the murders. The attempted murder of a female surgeon who Danenport has grown fond of complicates the picctures. The ending brings a surprise with it.
After re-reading Winter Prey for the first time in nearly 20 years, it still holds up and is actually stronger than the newer books and the older books in the Prey series that I've been re-reading lately. The good guys are great and conflicted, the bad guys are despicably horrible. Definitely one of the more intricate plots both in the series and for the genre. Not for the faint of heart, though.
First, Davenport meets Weather, which is a big plus for the story particularly given what happened two books ago. Second, the mystery around who the Ice Man really is is masterfully put together, just beautifully constructed even though we are with the Ice Man's point of view throughout the book. Lastly Sanford has an eye for detail that you really appreciate as a reader. It's never too much or contrived, but you read this one and the vividness of the portrayals demonstrates true command of the subject matter, which in this case is small town Minnesota during a brutal cold spell...
