This book takes knocks for it's conservative morals. Too bad, because it's a good story and a good romance. The hero, Ryven, is not only a Commander and a member of an alien race, he's the equivalent of royalty. His attitude towards his wife and his expectations of her behavior are not that farfetched. It's as much about her role in the hierarchy of their society as it is about his personal feelings.I do agree aspects of the story could have been better explored, and I felt Xera fell too easily for Ryven. Even if she was calm and submissive outwardly, due to her strange situation, there should have been more internal conflict. But, on the whole, I liked No Words Alone. I especially liked the infrared vision and the fact it gave Scorpios an advantage.
The only glaring error I found, besides a couple of words written as more than one word (homestead / home stead and independent / in de pen dent), was that the hero introduces himself as Ryven Atarus, yet--according to the story--'the Scorpio seemed unable to say v'. If he couldn't pronounce it, how could Xera have known there was a v in his name? And, taking that one step further, why *would* there be if the letter didn't exist in the Scorpio language to begin with? That was a whopper of an oops to make it all the way past the final edit.
This book isn't perfect, but it's largely well written and briskly paced. The hero is swoon worthy and the romance is good. If you can stomach old-fashioned values mixed with a little sci-fi gore, you should give No Words Alone a try. 3 1/2 stars.

Ryven and Xera. Okay so what do I look for in a romance novel? Alpha male? check. damsel in distress? check. protective male? check. hotness factor? check. well written? check. Wow. we have a recipe for a good novel here! In this story the humans aren't very nice to our Xera- and the Scorpio- (great name for a species by the way) are all very moral and decent and caring for their 'females' (like that isn't hot).
Xera of course, once they all leave the planet is taken as a prize and is with Ryven. She learns more about their culture- which again- hot. And spends time with Ryven. Again- more hot.
Then you have drama, and your HEA. all like you should in a great book. and for such a wonderful price. Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars!!
This was the perfect mix of action adventure, relatable characters & believable romance (love, actually). The heroine was absolutely kick-ass--she was fit & capable of defending herself but had no illusions that bigger, better trained male warriors would win hand-to-hand. By knowing & accepting her strengths & liabilities, she was brilliantly able to pick the battles she could win, and most of those ended up being a battle of wits. She knew her value & how to demonstrate that, and how 2 make herself even more valuable. She was honest but knew when to keep her mouth shut. She was loyal to her new family without denigrating her human family or culture. The world building was gr8 & the science was believable (to this layperson at least). The loose ends were tied up in a bit of a rush but there was a satisfying HEA.
After reading the reviews I must admit I hesitated reading the book, but was glad I eventually downloaded it.
When translator Xera's military vessel strands on an inhospitable planet, she is saved from her own crew mates by enemy commander Ryven, an aristocratic member of the mysterious Scorpio race. Xera is soon "recruited" as an ambassador of her people and pressured into an arranged marriage to Ryven. Xera tries to turn her difficult situation into a learning opportunity, but is soon confronted with what could be described as a huge culture shock. While she quickly becomes attached to Ryven and his entourage, finding her place in Scorpio society and gaining her husband's trust are a challenge throughout the book.
I would highly recommend this book to people who appreciate excellent world building, unusual love stories and cultural differences.
I'm hovering somewhere between 3.5 and 4. For the most part I enjoyed this book. It starts out by introducing us to Xera and her crew mates. They're in a bit of a tight spot, having crash-landed on a hostile planet with the enemy. It's tense, but the two groups need each-other to survive. It all felt a little reminiscent of the movie Pitch Black really--the beasts come out at night and all. Shortly thereafter Xera's thoughts, quite reasonably, turn to her very specific danger as the only woman among a group of unknown, probably dangerous alien males and the definitely not all together trustworthy men of her own crew. Lucky for Xera the enemy captain, Ryven, seems to have a soft spot for women and sees to her safety.
I had a few issues though. I say Xera's fears were reasonable and they were (almost any woman would recognise them), but part of me had to wonder how likely it would be for a woman to be on the crew in the first place if the risk was so real. There really is something to be said for not PUTTING YOURSELF into dangerous situations. Ryven was wonderful. He was smart, ruthless, kind, and loyal. He seemed to understand human nature enough to recognise the signs of danger in Xera's crew. The problem was there wasn't any reason he should understand human nature. He's a Scorpio and Scorpio men apparently aren't anything like human men.
I liked this beginning far better than the rest of the book if I'm honest. The beginning is Sci-fi, the rest is predominantly romance. Yes they go out on the occasional space ship and encounter the occasional hostile alien, but it's mostly about Xera, Ryven and the process of Xera settling into her new life with Ryven. I like a good romance as much as the next person but this one has all the hallmarks of being too positive. Too positive? Yes, too positive. A totally hot, kind, considerate, rich, heir to government falls in love with Xera on sight, then rescues her and takes her home to his wonderful family, who welcome her with open arms. She helps the downtrodden princess, thumbs her nose at local gender expectations without repercussions, and despite being an alien from a trespassing race is accepted by the populace at large. Granted, she wasn't really given any choice in the matter of marriage, but could it really all of been so painless?
The problem with narratives of this sort is that you know in advance that nothing really bad is going to happen. Everything will work out in her favour one way or another, be it realistic or not. That takes a lot of the suspense out of the story. I also was extremely saddened to think that even after humanity colonises the stars basic patriarchal attitudes towards women and sexual virtue would still hold such a strangle hold on Xera.
Having made my complaints I have to reiterate that I did enjoy the read. I liked almost all of the Scorpio men. Xera was easy to relate to, and the book was well written, without too many editorial mishaps. If I see the sequel on the free list I'll definitely grab them.
