The novel was written using an anonymous narrator and character dialog interspersed throughout the composition. The writing is straight forward, not complex, and should be acceptable to a wide audience. The writing style is fast paced clipped scenes, shallow character development with a concentration on action. The plot is tightly controlled with several twists and turns intended to capture and pique the reader's continued interest. There is a good deal of computer jargon and functional computer descriptions, but not beyond the average computer user's general understanding.

The story in main is about a brilliant computer hacker who is known by his online handle as"Phate". Jon Patrick Holloway, aka Phate, suffers a severe psychosis; he has elevated his role playing fantasy to real life scenarios and is killing people. An equally brilliant computer hacker and former role playing partner, "Valleyman", one Wyatt Gillette is recruited by the police to help capture Phate in a contest of wits and guile.

I quite liked this novel. It was fast moving and interesting in its concept. The plot was enthusiastic and the many twists and turns were well done. The characters were pretty shallow in development and some of them were easily forgotten in the course of the story. The scenes were equally shallow, at times a little dopey, and didn't add to any memorable aspect of the action; but then the distinct feeling was that they were not supposed to in this fast paced thriller. It had the feel that it was designed for a movie or television special as opposed to a memorable novel.

Overall this novel is a little light weight, but was quick and fun to read if you need a diversion. I would recommend it and rate it "Pleasurable not-memorable".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. About the time you think you've figured something out, or who someone is (or what it is maybe!), Deaver does another turnabout leaving you with another "huh?" When you think the case is about solved you may be amazed that you are only halfway through the book and there is more to come. Keep up the great story telling Mr. Deaver!
"The Blue Nowhere" was one of the best and scariest hacking novels I've read. Fantastic storyline. Great character development and murder and mayhem.It had me looking over my shoulder or in the rear-view mirror wherever I went The first hacking novel was a true story called "The Cuckoo's Egg." It recounted the first known case of hacking in the U.S. But "The Blue Nowhere" is so up-to-date it makes one want to get off the grid permanently. It's a great read and I learned a lot.
Too many Red Herrings. Deaver is known for twists at or near the end. His twists are easy to follow and sometimes to predict because they make sense in hindsight. This novel is great for computer nerds and will make a great gift for the geeks in your acquaintance. However, Deaver over does it this time with too many characters not being who they seem to be.and characters suspected of not being who they seem to be but turn out to be just that. The story is entertaining and a little scary, nonetheless. Worth the effort.
The publication date for this book is 2002. Reading it now, 10 years later, is undoubtedly a different experience. We've had 10 years of hackers and privacy discussions and lawmaking by political idiots who don't know anything about the internet. The problem is, WE (the 2012 reader) are much more savvy about the setting of this novel. In reading it, I found the characters under-developed and not very interesting the reason for that is that once Deaver finishes describing the technological background, there isn't much room for anything else. I realized that 10 years ago, the background tutorials would have been fascinating and probably would have carried the reader along, ooooh-ing and ahhh-ing all the way at the wonders of technology to come.

Now, of course, the technology has come--and gone. What is left is a familiar, unexciting backdrop for an underdeveloped characterization and superficial plot line. The Blue Nowhere did not stand the test of time.
I enjoy almost all of Deaver's characters and his interesting plot twists. Just when I think I've figured out what's going to happen next, and to whom, Deaver surprises me with a real "flyer" from leftfield! It keeps me on edge and interested all through the novel.

I never want to give away plot detail which will ruin the reading experience for others, but I will state that this particular novel would be best understood by those with some familiarity with computers. I can do a few basic things myself, but our protagonist in this novel has "mad" computer hacking skills, which he uses to battle with an antagonist with equal or perhaps even superior computer skills!
The novel seems to put forth the question, "Can an individual with such exceptional skill actually murder others using all that is known in the computer world? The Blue Nowhere??

I would definitely recommend this read for anyone who likes Deaver's work, and the netherworld of computer gaming!
Fascinating. I was pulled in and caught up in the story. I enjoyed it from start to finish. While I know there were liberties with the tech, I believe good storytelling needs creative liberties to entertain, as well as to educate on possibilities. The only issue I had trouble with, and a minor issue, the law enforcement departments were too willing to do shallow background checks on people and data, especially when engaged in life and death scenarios. But, be that as it may, it was a real "page turner" of an audio book.
